Question Number: 2803 RE: Gold Under 16 Jamie of Coquitlam, B.C. Canada asks...Some refs call a penalty if you call "my ball". I was wondering if this was infact a rule. Answer provided by Referee Gary Sebalja If you use it to mislead an opposing player to make them think that you are team mate and have a better opportunity to get the ball, but you are an opposition player you have committed misconduct.

View Referee Gary Sebalja profileAnswer provided by Referee stewart 12/11/2001As stated by my colleague, you are penalised for misconduct and the restart would be an Indirect Free Kick to the opposition. This is why coaches will usually encourage their players to shout their name rather than "mine" or "leave it".
