Question Number: 28150League Specific 2/3/2014RE: Adult SHABEER of Kozhikode, Kerala India asks...If a player shown 2 yellow cards in preliminary league round matches and the next match is the semi final, will the suspension be applicable in the semi final? Or will both cards be cancelled in end of the league round matches? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Shabeer
FIFA has stated that a player must miss the next game for getting sent off. If it is the same competition then the player will miss the semi final.
However some competitions are treated separately for disciplinary purposes with any suspension served in the competition that it relates to. Some leagues combine suspensions into all competition that it manages.
For instance a player sent off in the UK Premier League would not be suspended in the UEFA Champions League which could be the next game but would be suspended in the UK's League Cup if that was the player's next game.
