Law 16 - Goal Kick 2/28/2014

RE: Rec Adult

Nick of Kaohsiung, Taiwan asks...

Apart from the goalkeeper, or the kicker when used, can any players be in the penalty area during a goal kick?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Hi Nick,

Any number players from the team taking the kick may be in the Penalty Area during a goal kick.

No players from the opposing team may be inside the Penalty Area - although this is usually ignored as a trifling breach of the laws, as it very rarely impacts upon play.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Nick
There is no restriction on the kicking team as to the number of player it can have inside the penalty area on its own kick.
It could have all 11 players in there but none can touch the ball until it has left the penalty area when the ball becomes in play.
If an opponent is in there and he is exiting the area after the kick is taken the referee can deem that to be trifling when it has no affect on play.
