Law 16 - Goal Kick 3/7/2014

RE: Rec Under 16

Nathan Benjamin of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...

At a goal kick, the defender kicks the ball and it strikes the referee, who is standing outside of the penalty area. The kicker runs through and kicks the ball further up field. What would you do?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Is the ball in play?
Has it touched another player?

Law 15 provides the rest of the answer.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Nathan
Positioning by referees is very important. Getting hit by the ball during play happens and we have all been hit however we should do everything possible to ensure that it does not happen at a restart and certainly not around the penalty area. When it happens play just continues
The Laws give an answer as to what should happen when the ball has not been touched twice by a player at a restart after the ball has been put into play. The referee is not a player.
However I might throw some thought into the mix which may influence the referee's decision
Was the referee ready for the goal kick to be taken?
Was the goal kick taken in line with Law 15?
