Question Number: 28252

Law 11 - Offside 3/13/2014

RE: competive Under 14

MORRIS PARRAS of Hamilton, Ontario Canada asks...

Can a player be offside when their goal keeper kicks the ball from his net?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Morris
A player cannot be offside directly from any restart where the ball has left the field of play. That includes goal kicks, corner kicks or throw ins
Offside is also a team concept so that a player can only be offside when the ball is played by one of his team . When the ball is deliberately played by an opponent there cannot be offside.

While slightly out of date this FIFA presentation on offside will assist you

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Coach: it's not clear what you mean by "kicking from his net"?

If you mean at a goal kick, the answer is no. There is no offside when the ball is received directly from a goal kick.

When the ball is in play, a player (in offside position) who receives the ball after a keeper's punt can be offside.
