Question Number: 28306

Law 5 - The Referee 4/4/2014

RE: Competitive Under 19

Craig of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...

A second ball from an adjacent field goes onto the field. It is in a position that interferes with play. What should the ref do?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Craig
The referee should stop play, get the extra ball removed and restart with a dropped ball from where the ball was when play was stopped.
It is the referee's opinion as to whether the ball interferes with play and it could be a good idea to only stop in cases where there is certain interference not just the presence of a ball.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

If the referee judges that the ball is not affecting play or the players, there is no need to do anything.

But, once the other ball interferes with play, the referee should stop play, remove the extra ball, and restart play with a dropped ball where the (real) ball was located when play was stopped.
