Law 16 - Goal Kick 4/21/2014

RE: Rec,Select,Competive, Adult Adult

Steve of San Mateo, Ca USA asks...

Goal Kick: I understand the ball is not in play until it leaves the PA. I might be reading in to this too much. Ball is placed for a GK player miss kicks the ball attempting to pass the ball along the goal line to the outside. Ball crosses the goal line before leaving the PA. Restart? Corner kick for opposing team? or retake of goal kick?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Steve
As the goal kick has not left the penalty area and put into play the restart is a retake of goal kick.
It can only be a corner kick if the ball is in play which means that the ball must cross the goal line between the corner flag and the penalty area line.
It is quite rare and I have never seen this happen.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The ball is in play on a goal kick when it leaves the penalty area AND remains on the field of play. In this case, retake the goal kick.
