Question Number: 28431Law 16 - Goal Kick 5/17/2014RE: rec Under 11 Bob of union, sc united states asks...I coach a u10 and a u14 team. The refs are AYSO certified. On goal kicks taken by my team they are making all my defenders leave the penalty area. This is making a goal kick the best scoring opportunity for the opposing team as the offense runs to the edge of the line, steals the ball and has no defender in front of them. I am new to this league. In AYSO games I coached in California teams always kept defenders in the box. I know FIFA laws allow us to keep all 11 players in the box should we choose. My question is does AYSO go by FIFA rules? if not, what rules do they use? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Bob There is nothing wrong with having a defender/s inside the penalty area at a goal kick. Only attackers are not allowed inside and AYSO as I understand it play by FIFA rules. How else could a defender take a goal kick?
