Law 7 - Match Duration 6/15/2014

RE: Adult

donna of belleville, new jersey usa asks...

What does run overtime mean?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Donna
This is not a soccer term. I believe it refers to extra time that is played at the end of regulation time in a tied game. Generally it is 15 minutes per half making 30 minutes in total.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Under the laws of the game, a match can end in a tie. In certain competitions and tournaments where there has to be a winner, the most common method in amateur play to to play two additional periods (often referred to as overtime), and if still tied, to go to kicks from the penalty mark.
