Question Number: 28620Kicks From The Penalty mark 7/24/2014RE: competetive College abhinav rawat of pune, Maharashtra India asks...The match is tied till the end of extra time. Therefore the penalty shootout is the last measure to decide the winner. Now can any player in the playing eleven do the goalkeeping in the shootouts? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Any of the players on the field at the end of the match who are participating in the shoot out can assume the role of the keeper once the referee is notified. In point of fact it is STILL possible to substitute, as only the goalkeeper may be replaced by a named substitute provided his team has not used the maximum number of substitutes permitted under the competition rules includes extra time where appropriate, are eligible to take kicks from the penalty mark. Cheers

View Referee Richard Dawson profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Abhinav Yes this is allowed under the Laws. Any player on the field of play at the end of extra time can undertake the goalkeeping duties. Sometimes it might even be required if say the goalkeeper was unable to continue due to injury or getting sent off after the final whistle. It does not happen very often and I have seen this at underage where a better shot stopping goalkeeper has played outfield during regular play. The only requirement is that referee is informed of the change which he will agree to. Also as Referee Dawson points out an injured goalkeeper may be substituted during Kicks from the Penalty Mark provided the team has not used all its quota of substitutions during the game. This is the only exception to substitutions after the game has ended. If all the substitutions have been used then one of the remaining players left on the field of play must become the goalkeeper.
