Law 16 - Goal Kick 7/31/2014

RE: Competive Under 13

BLAIR of Charlottetown, pe Canada asks...

Goalie retrives the ball from out of bounds for a goal kick. But when returns to the field forgets and punts the ball instead of placing on the ground for a goal kick. What is the correct call?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Blair
Correct call is a goal kick. When a goal kick is incorrectly taken the restart is always a retake.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Retake the goal kick. The ball was not properly put back into play. The wise referee (or assistant referee) would remind the keeper that it should be a goal kick.

Note: this happens often with U-littles. Not so much in a competitive U13 match. The referee might assume that the keeper was wasting time if this was done in the last minutes of the match with the keeper's team ahead by one. A caution for wasting time could be appropriate in that situation. The restart, however, is still a goal kick.

The restart was done incorrectly it must be retaken!
Interestingly enough while we MUST kick the goal kick from a stationary position anywhere within the 6 yard goal area no where in current law does it say the ball must be stationary lol This one of those long standing laws that get passed down in tradition if not words on newly printed law books.
Many of the mini small sided programs allow the keeper to punt the ball ! On the transition to regular soccer from mini perhaps a warning. Likely a caution show the yellow card for wasting time if we are talking seasoned 11 aside players lol
