Question Number: 28716

Law 13 - Free Kicks 9/9/2014

RE: Rec Under 15

Arnie Klauber of Oak Park, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 28707

Can you get a yellow card if you don't automatically give the 10 yards on the free kick.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Arnie,
YUP!
You do not :get: a yellow card, what you are is 'CAUTIONED!' and shown the yellow card for the USB behaviour exhibited when you failed to respect the MANDITORY REQUIRED MINIMUM distance.
A defending team has ZERO rights. Whereas the attacking team has every right to be able to take their kick as soon as they wish without ANY interference from the opponents.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

It is a myth that the attacking team must ask for ten yards. Referees will usually be proactive about warning players who don't retreat, but they are taught to caution players who run up and stand in front of the ball to prevent a quick free kick.
