Question Number: 28763

Mechanics 9/21/2014

RE: Comp Under 19

Alex of San Francisco , Ca USA asks...

Hi all, really glad I came across this site

My question is , what's the correct mechanics for the following situation

Say I am the AR , and the ball briefly passes the goal line for a goal , and comes back into play. Do I raise my flag up to get the centers attention that I saw the ball go over? What if we make eye contact after he/she sees my flag up I do the run up the touch line like after a regular goal?
Just wanting to get the proper mechanics down , appreciate it guys .

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Alex
The correct signal is to raises the flag vertically to get the referee's attention
and then, after the referee stops play, run a short distance up the touch
line toward the halfway line to confirm that a goal has been scored.

Hi Alex,
glad you find the site as well!. Those here who answer the questions do so as volunteers to share their love of the game , knowledge and experience as a way of giving back to the game. The mechanics for indicating the goal when it goes 100% completely over the goal line under the crossbar and between the posts are exactly as described by my colleague REF McHugh. I might add upon the eye contact one could give a thumbs up mouth 'good goal' and /0r nod the head yes as you sprint up the line !
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The USSF Guide to Procedure provides for the mechanic to be used by the assistant referee.

1. Be at/go to the corner and raise your flag.
2. Stand with flag up, and wait for the whistle.
3. Make eye contact with the referee
3. Sprint up the touchline to indicate 'good goal'
