Question Number: 28791

Law 11 - Offside 9/27/2014

RE: Parent lineman Under 12

david of trowbridge, wiltshire uk asks...

This question is a follow up to question 28688

Attackers A and B have got behind the defence and run on to the goal. Attacker A shoots at the goalie who parries it out to Attacker B who is positioned behind/backwards of Attacker A (not as quick a runner as A) but still ahead of the defenders. If A had passed it backwards to B it wouldn't have been offside but to clarify because the keeper parried it out to B who was still behind A, was that still not off side?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi David, spot on mate!
Not offside BECAUSE he was BEHIND the ball when the shot was taken. People often forget that aspect when judging offside. When there are no opponents to consider, the ball itself is the offside line. ONLY if attacker A had foolishly gone ahead of the BALL, before player B took the shot would the deliberate save/rebound be looked upon as offside on his playing of the ball.
look to question 28668, 28671 there is a video tag attached showing how the 2 on 0 rush can so easily be misconstrued
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi David
To be onside there are two possibilities. One is to have two opponents between between the player and the goal line or to be behind the ball. In this case Attacker B was behind the ball so he was in an onside position no matter what way the ball came to him. Correct decision not offside, good goal?

Answer provided by Referee James Sowa

Correct David! We determine the offside at the time of the shot (I doubt the keeper deliberately parried to another attacker). Since attacker B was behind the ball at the time of the shot, they can not be offside. Good goal!
