Question Number: 29070

Law 11 - Offside 12/25/2014

RE: any Other

Danny of Jupiter, Florida USA asks...

If team A player is in an OSP and a team B defender accidentally somehow passes the all to the team A player in the offsides position is it still offsides.'

Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Hi Danny,

Offside must come from a teammate - that can be directly or indirectly (deflection off a defender). There needs to be a 'last touch' by a teammate in that 'phase' of play. In the situation where a defender has just made a pass that was intercepted this cannot be penalised for offside.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Danny
A player cannot be offside from a throw in, goal-kick, corner kick or where the ball has been deliberately played to him by an opponent.
However in situations where the ball deflects / rebounds off an opponent from a pass by a team mate of the player in an offside position then offside will still apply should the PIOP interfere with play or an opponent.
There can be a thin line of interpretation between what is deliberately played and what is a deflection / rebound and that is a matter for the referee to decide on. Mis kicks, poor execution of a play are not deflections / rebounds
