Question Number: 29317

Law 16 - Goal Kick 4/15/2015

RE: Adult

Ibra of Jazan, KSA asks...

If the keeper play a goalkick and by mistake the ball doesn't get out of the penalty area, and unfortunately the opponent's striker was in the penalty area and receive the bal and send it to the net
It would be considered as a goaaal ???
Or the ref call to play the ball again as gaolkick??

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
The ball cannot be touched inside the penalty area as the ball is not in play until it leaves the penalty area. If the ball is touched inside the penalty area by a player from either team the goal kick is retaken.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Ibra,
the LOTG require the kick to be retaken. An aware referee could be hitting the whistle early to stop the unnecessary shot. Allowing a dead play to go beyond its time, could result in injury.
Cheers
