Question Number: 29374

Law 14 - Penalty kick 5/1/2015

RE: Adult

Farid ahmad of kunduz , kunduz afghanistan asks...

If referee does not see the penalty but lineman sees it and raised the flag but referee did not see also the flag ordered to continued later on saw that the flag is up than ordered to have penalty.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Farid
Yes a penalty would be awarded provided the referee agrees with his assistant. It makes no difference if the flag is missed as long as play has not stopped and restarted again elsewhere on the field. Once play stops and restarts a referee cannot go back on his decision.
