RE: Rec / Select Under 13

Brad Heers of Plymouth, Michigan United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 29375

Follow up note about question 29375 (regarding referees removing concussed player from game). Although LOTG does not empower referees to remove a player, in some states there is a legal obligation to not only coaches and parents, but also to other adults involved (including referees). In Michigan, for instance, I am legally obligated to remove a youth from active play if I have reason to believe he or she has sustained a concussion. As I understand, many other states in the US have similar laws.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Brad
Thanks for sharing this. I suspect the argument is whether the referee believes there is concussion or not and faced with a difficult coach. The matter should not arise with teams erring on the side of caution.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

It is very important that the referee know and follow the procedures set forth in the local rules of the competition and local state law. IMO, however, every coach and official should learn the signs and symptoms of concussion even if not required by their local laws. The US Center for Disease Control is an excellent resource. http://www.cdc.gov/headsup/
