Question Number: 29506Kicks From The Penalty mark 6/28/2015RE: Competitive Under 13 Jason of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...Hi, In a knockout final, our game went to penalties. Our team was up 3-1, they had two shots still to go when the referee blew time and awarded the game to us....The question is does the result actually stand - given if they got the next two and we missed one it would have been 3-3 after the alotted 5 shots? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi Jason, the math does not add up?? There is a scheduled 5 attempts each to a standard PK shoot out. IF the score is tied after the 5 attempts only then is sudden death, shot for shot initiated To NOT have both teams to shoot all 5 PKs. ONE team would have to be up more goals than the opportunity to tie left. For you to be up 3 to 1 in PKS with the 4th shot STILL to be taken by the opposition. Your team must have missed 1 of their four shots. Your team MUST have shot first to think the opposition had two more chances, their 4th and 5th. Your team would have a 5th shot yet to take. You make that 5th shot your team would win, no need for the opposition to shoot their 5th as it would not matter. IF what I have postulated is true the referee, by NOT permitting the opposition their RIGHT to continue, is 100% against the LOTG and created a protestable situation. If I was your opponents and the referee failed to conduct the penalty shootout properly, knowing the match could be ordered to be replayed I would file a protest! It generally costs a fee of some sort to file and there is usually a timeframe or deadline attached. As my colleague points out it seems strange those in attendance would not quickly raise a ruckus right then and there but I coached a girls team many years ago and the referee did similar to what you describe except we still had our turn in sudden death, as we were tied 4 to 4 after 5 still tied after 6 both teams missed then they made their 7th to go up 5 to 4 referee called it over forgetting we were shooting 2nd thus still had a chance to equalize. I protested referee ignored me in fact I was reported for calling him an idiot and the other coach for not speaking up sigh but the match was declared void, we replayed it at a later date! Cheers

View Referee Richard Dawson profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Jason Someone has made a calculation error here. One would like to think that the referee and his assistants who are keeping a record of the scores got it correct. If not then a serious error has been made which can be protested. I suspect though that the coaches, players etc were also keeping a check so that if this error had been made it would have been brought to the attention of the referee immediately so that it could have been sorted there and then. Those participating in the game have their wits about them and they generally know what is happening. One only has to watch KFTPM that don't go the full way to see players rush forward when they know the desired result has been achieved. I can only recall once being asked for a score in KFTPM. If the referee crew got it wrong and proven so then the competition organisers could request that the penalty kicks are completed correctly.

If a team still has a chance to level the score, the match can not be concluded. An error such as this could lead to a protest of the match and potentially a replay depending on competition rules. That said, if no one said anything about the referee ending the match, perhaps he was correct and the game was truly over.
