Question Number: 29642

Law 18 - Common Sense 8/30/2015

RE: Adult

Javier of chicago, illinois eeuu asks...

Can i ask the referee to show me his watch?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Javier,
One can ask politely for most anything. Asking the referee to look at his match as a means to dispute his concept of match time is not likely to go well. Nor is he under ANY obligation to show you or tell you exactly how much match time is left. As a referee I generally only give out generalizations and usually I give a 5 minute warning and add an approximate added on time to assist coaches with substitutions but if asked how much time Ref? We rarely look at the watch and tell you exactly as it generally is not realistic or appropriate. However , not to say a ball knocked way out, into touch a polite, 'How much time ref? ' might get you and approximate answer say ten or fifteen from an agreeable referee.

Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Javier
Not a good idea and one that most referees will nit tsje kindly to. If a player is so concerned abouy time then get his coach to provide the time.
