Question Number: 29680

League Specific 9/10/2015

RE: High School

Harry Boyd of East Hartford, CT usa asks...

When does the clock start back up after a missed penalty kick

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Harry
The timekeeper restarts the clock only when the ball is legally put back into play. In the case of a penalty kick when the ball is kicked not when the referee whistles. If a goal is scored then the clock is stopped and restarts again with the kick off. If the goal is not scored then the clock continues as per normal as the ball is legally in play.

Answer provided by Referee James Sowa

Harry,

Referee McHugh has it right here. The timekeeper should start the clock as soon as the ball is kicked. It seems to be a common issue though, that since the clock stops for a goal, the timekeeper waits until the ball is saved (essentially assuming a goal will be scored).

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Harry,
timekeeper restarts at the taking of the PK kick and If a goal scores , immediately stops the clock to await kick off. If the PK misses for a goal kick or goes out for corner or play continues, the clock stays running, unless signalled at discretion of referee for a foul or misconduct that creates the need for showing a yellow and red card, or if an injury occurs!
Cheers
