I am not a fan when in a dual ref system, the other referee calls fouls on my side of the field, closer to the goal line. But over the weekend, i was involved in a play i was happy my colleague intervened.

The defenders are lined up at the midfield line when the middle defender receives a pass from a teammate. As the opposing team aproaches, the defender makes a pass that is deflected by the opposing team and has a weak trajectory towards the goalie. Me, being lined up with the 2nd to last defender started trailing the ball. The goalie runs to the top of the goal area and awaits for the ball. The same player putting pressure on the defender is now chasing the ball as well. The goalie was the first to the ball but decides to wait for the ball so he can handle it. It looked like the goalie might pick up the ball outside his area. As i focus my attention on the potential infraction, i hear a whistle. The other referee comes running with yellow card in hand. Turns out the defender tried helping his goalie by knocking the attacker from behind. I was so focused on the potential foul in front of me that i did not forsee the foul happening away from the ball. Had my colleague not interfered, i would have never heard the end of it.

yes trust and another set of eyes given there are no ARS to link up with to see the rest of the field when we get too focused on what is in front of us! Good point! A referee with integrity sees what he sees!

The dual system (aka 2 whistles) presents many challenges and is not permitted in any games affiliated with US Soccer/FIFA. It is most commonly used in US high school matches.

As you saw, there are gaps in coverage because we prioritize and position for the next decision that an assistant referee would ordinarily make, and can miss key fouls. Bravo to your partner for staying focussed on play. Note: there is no 'my half' of the field in the dual system of control. Both partners need to share responsibilities throughout the entire field.
