Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/30/2015

RE: Adult

Sue of Tampa, Fl Usa asks...

A player asks for and received permission to leave the field to have an ankle taped. Well off the field and will play still occurring, he becomes engaged in a fight with an opposing substitute and it sent off. Does a drop ball occur, penalty kick, indirect free kick, or direct free kick?

Answer provided by Referee MrRef

The restart for an action that occurs off the field of play, while the ball is in play, as a stoppage, is a drop ball from where the ball was on the FOP subject to law 13 special circumstances within the 6 yards goal area.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
The answer to this is outlined on page 120 of the current law book second bullet point.
As the misconduct happened off the field of play while the ball is in play it is assumed that the referee stops play to deal with the incident.
Due to the fact that the player was entitled to be off the field of play by permission then the restart is a dropped ball from where the ball was when play was stopped.
