Question Number: 30035League Specific 1/20/2016RE: I High School Edson of Houston, Tx United States asks...The home team coach ask for a 20 minute halftime interval for a parent appreciation ceremony . The visiting teams coach is opposed to this and insists that the interval be only 10!'inuted. The referee shall not allow a 20- minute halftime interval? True or false? Answer provided by Referee Joe Manjone Edison, The answer is true and this is indicated in NFHS Rule 7-2-1. The halftime interval shall be 10 minutes unless opposing coaches mutually agree to a different length. Having a visiting coach turn down a request like this is rare, but it does happen for a variety of reasons, but as the rules states, both coaches must agree for the halftime interval to be extended beyond 10 minutes. I know that the high school season has just started in Texas, and hopefully, your team will be very successful. Please let me know if there are any other questions that the other refs or myself can help you with.

Obviously the best solution is for the coaches to reach agreement so that no ruling has to be made. However in the event of none being reached then the referee is obliged to follow the rule which is indicated by Referee Manjone.
