Question Number: 30148Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 2/27/2016RE: Middle School and High School Under 15 Jaime of Edinburg , Texas USA asks...What would be the call if a player steps off the pitch to drink water? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Generally stepping off the field of play to lift a water bottle is a trifling matter and referees would be wise to deal with it through instruction. Pro players are careful not to do this as it can be sanctioned.

I agree that in most cases this is trifling and should be dealt with by warning the players not to do it again. Referees can head off this behavior on hot days by telling players to have water bottles stationed near the sidelines. Someone off the field can hand it to the player who remains on the field.

But sanctioned water breaks in extreme conditions with water along the touchlines and goal lines easily reached makes this a rarity. I see no justification to caution for such an event unless it was flagrantly done to disrespect the officials in some manner! cheers
