Question Number: 30148

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 2/27/2016

RE: Middle School and High School Under 15

Jaime of Edinburg , Texas USA asks...

What would be the call if a player steps off the pitch to drink water?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
Generally stepping off the field of play to lift a water bottle is a trifling matter and referees would be wise to deal with it through instruction. Pro players are careful not to do this as it can be sanctioned.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

If the referee decides it is necessary to call something, it's a caution for leaving the field of play without the permission of the referee.

I agree that in most cases this is trifling and should be dealt with by warning the players not to do it again. Referees can head off this behavior on hot days by telling players to have water bottles stationed near the sidelines. Someone off the field can hand it to the player who remains on the field.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Jamie,
few referees would get bent especially in that region of the world where 100 degrees is possible. But sanctioned water breaks in extreme conditions with water along the touchlines and goal lines easily reached makes this a rarity. I see no justification to caution for such an event unless it was flagrantly done to disrespect the officials in some manner!
cheers
