Question Number: 30333Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/22/2016RE: Intermediate Under 13 Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...This question is a follow up to question 30328 Does this mean that the high school rule is different than FIFA? Under the LOTG, an opponent can't challenge from behind, even if the ball is in playing distance of both players...although this seems to be ignored in professional soccer. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Phil Not sure what you mean about not challenging from behind. I assume you mean not charging from behind? There is no restriction on the direction of any challenge as long as the opponent is not fouled in doing so. Indeed many fair challenges are from behind with the opponent either not making foul contact or if there is contact it is incidental having no impact on the opponent.
Now the question related to charging and in both codes charging from the rear is not allowed. The description of a legal charge would be same for both so for it to be legal it had to be side to side, shoulder use only and reckless or excessive force cannot be used.

Here is the high school rule of a fair charge: 'An allowable fair charge is where players make shoulder-to-shoulder contact in an upright position, within playing distance of the ball, have at least one foot on the ground and their arms held close to their body' Also, another part of the rule states: 'A player shall not charge into an opponent when neither player is within playing distance of the ball.'
