Question Number: 30394

Law 16 - Goal Kick 5/9/2016

RE: Adult

Serkan Kemal of London, UK asks...

Can a goal keeper score an own goal from a goal kick? assuming the ball did not leave the area.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Serkan
No that is not possible. An own goal cannot be scored from any restart including a goal kick. In Your instance the restart is a retake.
Interesting that come 1st June 2016 with the new laws the restart is spelt out as a corner kick if the ball enters the goal directly having exited the penalty area first. Very rare yet it has happened.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Hi Serkan,
From a goal kick one cannot score an own goal.
If, however, the keeper had received the ball and caught it in general play he can certainly score an own goal, as this is not a goal kick (even though many people think all the 'goal kick' laws apply to this situation).
