Question Number: 30406

Law 4 - Players Equipment 5/11/2016

RE: Competitive Under 12

Coach Moreno of Redwood City, CA San Mateo asks...

Is a player allowed to wear indoor shoes to play on grass or turf fields? I had this happened this weekend and I did not know what to do.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The only thing the Laws require is footwear (and that all equipment must be safe, for example, not have any sharp edges). Shoes is shoes.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

As long as it is not dangerous to themselves or others, players can wear it. Indoor shoes are fine to wear outside.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
It is not an issue to wear indoor shoes in an outdoor game. Most modern soccer shoes have the quality of indoor shoes anyway with the addition of cleats. The Laws do not specify the type or quality just that footwear must be worn. So not an issue for the referee and it should be allowed.
Now it might not be the smartest decision should it rain with limited grip.
