Question Number: 30410Law 11 - Offside 5/13/2016RE: High School Chris of Raleigh, NC usa asks...Law 11 question here I think. Here is the scenario. An attacking player is onside when a back team mate sends a long forward ball in the air. While the ball is in the air the attacking player crosses the defensive line and gets ahead of the ball, but only while the ball is still in the air. As the ball lands its now past the attacker and lands ahead of the attacking player. Fair to assume this is NOT off sides? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Not offside. Offside position is evaluated when a teammate touches the ball, and doesn't change again until another touch.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Chris You are indeed correct. No offside. This is a classic way to beat offside. Be in an onside position the moment the ball is played / touched by a team mate and then run on to the ball. Makes no difference in what location the ball is touched by the onside player as he was clearly onside at the moment the ball was played.
