Question Number: 30513

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/15/2016

RE: Competitive Adult

Jeff of Morristown, TN United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 30506

Thanks for your clarification of my issue. I'm glad I didn't say anything now! Though I know from past experience this referee would not have heeded any advice I gave on this.

I agree the caution for removing the shirt is excessive, especially in a case where the player has already been cautioned. The player did not seem to be expressing dissent by removing the shirt (as sometimes happens). All leagues have a few quirks, and zero-tolerance for removing your shirt on the FOP is one of ours.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jeff
Your most welcome. Thanks for the clarification on the shirt removal. In this part of the world the caution would just not happen. Interestingly had the player waited until he crossed the touchline and the substitution completed I wonder if the referee would have sent him off? Or for that matter when the game is over after the final whistle if all the players removed their shirts on the field of play would they all be cautioned?
Ronaldo after scoring the last penalty in the ECL Final to win the game removed his shirt and he was not cautioned which IMO was the correct decision. No need for the referee to intervene.
