Question Number: 30587Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 7/10/2016RE: Ex pro Adult Billy of London, United Kingdom asks...A player has the ball and is running away from the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper calls at the player to 'leave' the ball, which he does. The player hasn't deliberately kicked the ball toward the goalkeeper so no free kick can be given. Yes or No? Likewise if the player uses his foot to stop the ball. Again, not kicking the ball. I would be interested in your views. Billy Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Billy Both scenarios would be deemed as deliberate kicks to the goalkeeper and the GK would be restricted from using his hands in such situations. The distance and direction of the kick is irrelevant so stopping the ball with the foot is a kick albeit inches and also leaving the ball after touching it with the feet in a dribble is also a kick. It is why the misnomer of a backpass is unhelpful. The kick can be forwards as well. It does not happen very often yet it does occur.
