The law is mute on this point. As Law 1 states that the lines must be no more than 5 inches in width we can deduct that the mark should be no wider than five inches also. I have seen everything from an X to a square to a circle. The important part is that it is there and positioned 12 yards from the goal line in the center of the goals. It can help as well to ensure that any damage to the mark is repaired before kick off. Penalty marks do get quite worn and then they become a depression which can cause problems with ball placement particularly if it is wet and filled with water.
