Question Number: 30799

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/22/2016

RE: Amateur Adult

George of Parangarecutirimicuaro, CA Sacratomato asks...

This question is a follow up to question 30792

As soon as i read this question, i imagined a play i see often with the adults. In my scenario, a ball is traveling along the touchline. The player on field is shielding the ball, the defender is playing the ball while off the field and the soccer fan is complaining not knowing what is going on.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi George
As described there is no offence. It is not unusual for spectators to complain about something that they know little if anything about.

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi George,

I am not sure I have seen the ball travelling along the touchline scenario.

A somewhat more common scenario is where the ball is being held in the corner by an attacker and while one defender remains behind the attacker to prevent him turning infield, another defender goes off the field and around the outside of the attacker to try to get to the ball.

In any event there is no offence in going off the field in an attempt to play the ball.
