Question Number: 30844Law 8 - The Start and Restart of Play 10/2/2016RE: Professional Haji Hussain Jan of Muscat, Muscat Oman asks...Can a player score an own goal from a kickoff? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi Haji, No, even though the kick off CAN now be played backwards as a method of starting or restarting play, you can not score upon yourself directly. For a goal a 2nd player (which could include the keeper) would have to make physical contact with the ball in some manner, even if illegally . One could then apply the advantage clause and permit the goal as it would not enter the goal directly . Should an own goal BE scored directly from the kickoff the restart would be a corner kick. Cheers
