Question Number: 30863Law 11 - Offside 10/6/2016RE: College Friz of Abuja, Nigeria asks...If a player plays a pass to a team mate who is already in a offside position and a defender in a deliberate attempt to intercept the pass mis-kicks the ball and it falls into the path of the same player whom the pass was intended for. Will he still be judged offside? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi The deliberate kick by the defender resets offside. So as described there is no offence. Law 11 is not designed to allow for poor play by defenders. Now in some instances there can be a fine line between a play of the ball and a deflection. That is left to the referee to opine which it is.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Hi , based solely on your description NO offside. Still eternal conundrum lingers in the minds of many. Was it a miskick off a deliberate action or an instinctive reaction performed without the necessary awareness of time, space or speed to be able to truly say the action was a deliberate one. As my colleague aptly points out tis the opinion of the referee his match, his decision, his reputation! Cheers
