Question Number: 30989

Law 11 - Offside 11/1/2016

RE: competitive Under 19

joe of placentia, ca usa asks...

If a defender (A1) clears the ball and deflects off an attacker (B1) who is onside to another attacker (B2) who is offside. Would B2 attacker be offside if he or she gets the ball

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi Joe,
Yes, this would constitute an offside offence. In determining offside, the nature of the touch by a team mate is immaterial (unlike a touch or play on the ball by an opponent where we have to distinguish between a deliberate play and an accidental deflection).

If, when the ball touched B1, B2 were in an offside position and if B2 were the next player to touch the ball, an offside infraction would have occurred.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Joe
As described this is offside. The touch by B1 even though accidental is still a touch and as the ball has come from B1 to B2 who is in an offside position at that touch offside will be called when B2 interferes with play or an opponent.
