Question Number: 31018

Law 14 - The Penalty kick 11/13/2016

RE: Youth to adult, comp and rec.

Barry Stewart of Chilliwack, BC Canada asks...

This question is a follow up to question 31014

Not that I've ever had such a windy situation for PKs¦ but if we are ever in the situation where it's so breezy that the ball won't stay put, could an AR or other designate be used as a 'holder' as in gridiron football, to simply apply a finger atop the ball to hold it in place?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Barry,
lol If that was the only way I think it could be a law 18 solution.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Barry
If it so windy that a ball will not stay at rest perhaps time to go home. Anyway it is not possible to use someone to finger hold the ball.
I know one enterprising ref suggested on the site that on astro turf he uses a hair tie to place under the ball to give it a bit of grip, a sort of invisible tee. The ball sits on on the circular tie and it has no impact on the kick nor is it seen.
Not sure of the legality of it yet it gets the job done at lower levels of the game.
