Question Number: 31036

Law 13 - Free Kicks 11/19/2016

RE: competetive

Kevan key of cheddington, bucks United Kingdom asks...

When a indirective free kick is awarded can you just shoot for goal (in the hope for a deflection)

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Kevan,
absolutely but then it becomes a strategic move on defenders or keeper to just let it go directly into the net. That said INDFKs or DIRECT throw ins it is difficult for the keeper not to automatically use their hands or a defender to stick out a playable body part to try and stop a ball THAT they SHOULD allow into the goal to get the goal kick. Habits die hard! lol It is also why the referee MUST declare and signal it is in fact an INDFK with the raised arm so NO confusion is presented to either team!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Kavan
Yes that is possible. The risk is that the defending team do not make any attempt to play the ball and a goal cannot be scored directly. So playing for a possible deflection may not be the wisest move..
