Question Number: 31106

Law 11 - Offside 12/12/2016

RE: select Adult

Atif Jadoon of Abbottabad, Islamabad Pakistan asks...

Sir if a player kick the ball on the goal the ball rebound by keeper or goal post and straight goes to the teammate of the player wo kick the ball and at the time of kick of player one the second one is standing offside tell me plz after the rebound the player 2 will remain the offside or not

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi Atif,
As described, this would be an offside offence under the category of 'gaining an advantage.'

According to Law 11, a player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played by a team-mate is to be penalised if he gains an advantage ''by playing the ball [...] when it has rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent.''

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Atif,
If there is a restricted player who was offside positioned at the time the shot by his team mate was taken there is NOTHING that (OPP)(offside positioned player) can do ON his OWN can rest that restriction. A REBOUND or DEFLECTION or a DELIBERATE SAVE of the ball by the opponent or off a goal post, crossbar or official that restricted player remains off his side no matter where he is or where he goes and is not permitted to participate in play.
To RESET offside, our OPP is revaluated when a new touch of the ball occurs by a team mate, the opposition deliberately plays the ball, note (a deliberate save) is not included, it is treated like a rebound! or the ball exits the FOP.
If I have interpreted what you say correctly the 2nd player remains restricted and if he played the ball off that rebound or save it would be an INDFK offence from where he touched the ball !
Cheers & MERRY CHRISTMAS

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Atif
A similar question was asked recently in #31063 when Lingard of Manchester United scored against West Ham. Lindgard had been in an offside position when the shot was taken and he scored off a save by the goalkeeper and the rebound off the post. So it was correctly given as offside.
So in the question posed here the correct decision is offside for gaining an advantage by being in an offside position.
