Question Number: 31154

Law 5 - The Referee 1/4/2017

RE: Rec, Grade 8 USSF Ref Under 13

Mark of San Rafael, CA United States asks...

Is there a center referee hand signal for offside?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Nope, just the signal for the indirect free kick restart.

In fact, there are NO referee signals for what has already happened. All signals are only for what will happen next. Sure, some signals are specific to one thing - for example the ref pointing to the corner flag for the upcoming corner kick means that the ball went over the goal line, last touched by the defending team, and a goal was not scored - there's no possible other meaning. But the signal is really indicating the upcoming restart.

Hi Mark,
we blow for the INDFK offence if there is involvement by the OPP, so we point to the spot of the restart and raise our right hand to indicate the INDFK as prescribed by the LOTG. I have said, he is offside out loud a few times but no special signal that I am aware of!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi Mark,
As Ref Voshol correctly points out, there are no referee hand signals given in the Laws for specific offences. There are only 8 prescribed signals: Indirect free kick, direct free kick, advantage (2 signals for this), penalty kick, red and yellow card, corner kick, goal kick.

I have seen various referees use different informal gestures where they 'mime' the offence (pulling, pushing etc) but these are purely unofficial and not specified (or, for that matter, recommended) in the Laws of the Game document itself.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Mark
There is no specific signal for offside other than it is a indirect free kick restart which is the raised arm signal. Most times when the offside is called it is patently obvious what the call is. I sometimes just shout offside if there is a question as to why the whistle has sounded.
