Question Number: 31288

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 2/23/2017

Gavin of London, UK asks...

Hi

If a player gets 2 yellow cards or a red in a game but for whatever reason the game has to be abandoned (Lights, weather, ect)...Does the player serve his ban immediately or start his ban when the match is replayed assuming the match has to be replayed. Does his ban even apply

Regards

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Gavin
Cards received in an abandoned game do count and they are reported. In this case the player will be reported to the competition organisers and be suspended according to the sending off offence. If the game is replayed the player does not take part in the rearranged fixture which does not count towards his suspension.
Also an abandoned fixture does not count towards clearing a player of suspension as it is not a completed fixture. Any misconduct received in the fixture will still be processed. Importantly, this is still the case even if a league decides that the result from the abandoned fixture stands.
