Question Number: 31295Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 2/25/2017RE: rec, select Under 15 Gary D of nashua, nh usa asks...This question is a follow up to question 31290 The player in the situation I described was shooting and the contact caused the shot to go wide, also contact was more reckless than careless, so yes to foul? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Gary The action at the time of the charge makes no difference. It is about whether the conditions of a legal charge were there or not. If the referee opines that the contact was careless then it is a free kick or penalty kick. My take is that if the opponent is in shoot mode then the chances of a legal charge being present are perhaps less. More likely an illegal charge after the ball is gone.

Whether the charge caused a shot to go wide would not necessarily be the deciding factor. What you describe does sound like it could well have been a foul but once again, only the referee who was there at the time could decide that.
