Question Number: 31370Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 3/19/2017RE: Rec High School Saul F. of Goshen, IN USA asks...There was a play between a Liverpool attacker Mane and Manchester City defender Otamendi. Mane was dribbling the ball towards City's goal and defender Otamendi was right behind him. Mane was inside the penalty area and as Mane was about to shoot the ball, he swung and made contact with Otamendi's leg. It looked from the replay that Otamendi was just running and didn't stick his foot out. Is that a pk or not? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson HI Saul, the running part is one thing but running side by side or just slightly in behind has the referee seen the attacker swing the leg out TO ENSURE contact thus draw a foul or was the defender's leg in challenging for the ball placed where contact was inevitable? The referee made a decision the leg was placed in the way to stop a shot and thus tripped the player. I I think the referee judged it as a careless foul NO card as I recall so His match His decision His reputation. A referee with integrity sees what he see whether or not we see it different. Cheers

One of the challenges for the referee is that players have become adept at making fouls. Did Mane kick his opponents leg or was the leg defenders leg positioned to trip the attacker. I have witnessed players kicking opponents while running with the ball to make it look like they were fouled by a trip. Not so.
