Question Number: 31439Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/7/2017RE: Rec Under 19 Salvador flores of Indianapolis, IN Usa asks...I wanna know if the ref was right on not giving any yellow or red card and no foul on Steven Gerard. The play is on minute 3:35. He comes in the with his studs and makes contact with another player after kicking the ball. https://youtu.be/onhP1qo6WSU Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Salvador I suspect that in real time on the field of play that this action would not have looked reckless or using excessive force. Looking at it both players were committed to playing the ball and unfortunately momentum from the kick caused Gerrard to follow through. I doubt that the kick could have happened without that happening. So for me the correct decision was made. Now that is not to say that another referee might opine differently in other circumstances. In an underage game a referee might be less tolerate of such strong physical plays.

I did not see it as a CLEAR studs up tackle, just a side boot across the ball where the foot of the late player goes under and it gets step on. Call me crazy but although in slow motion it looks worse I doubt I make any call in real time! Cheers
