Question Number: 31562

Law 16 - The Goal Kick 5/26/2017

RE: Rec Under 15

Jeff Banks of Kona, HI USA asks...

A goal kick was taken and a teammate stayed inside the penalty area. The goal kick rebounds off of his teammate's back into the goal.
Is the goal kick retaken?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jeff
As the ball has not left the penalty area it is NOT in play and a goal cannot be scored. The restart is a retake of the goal kick.
It would only be a goal if the ball rebounded off a player OUTSIDE the penalty area.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Jeff,
on ANY outgoing free kick from within a defender's own penalty area (of which a goal kick is one) the ball MUST completely clear the PA boundary lines to be in play.
If the ball strikes a teammate or opponent BEFORE that occurs the kick WILL be retaken!
If it is an accident then no big deal, it will be retaken.
If it occurs due to the player trying to intercept be he a teammate or an opponent there is the possibility of a caution for delaying the restart and the culprit shown a yellow card the kick will still be retaken !
Cheers
