Question Number: 31595Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/10/2017RE: AYSO Under 11 Jeff Reiner of Kona, HI USA asks...Is the term 'infringement' used for fouls and misconducts? Is it a general term for an offense? Is there a FIFA definition for infringement? Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright Hi Jeff, I suspect there's a deeper reason you're asking this? Infringement would refer to any breach of the laws. Whether it's a foul, misconduct, or something such as an incorrectly taken restart.

View Referee Jason Wright profileAnswer provided by Referee Peter Grove Hi Jeff, Actually, as of the 2017-18 edition, the Laws of the Game as written and published by the IFAB (not FIFA) no longer use the word 'infringement' - they only use 'offence.' The explanation given by the IFAB in the 'Details of all Law changes' section is as follows: ''Many languages do not have different words for 'offence' and 'infringement', the difference is not clearly understood (even by English experts) and their use inconsistent e.g. a player can be an 'offender' but not an 'infringer'. To make the Laws clearer and to assist translation, 'offence' and 'offend' replace 'infringement' and 'infringe'.'' According to the glossary included in the laws document, an offence is: ''An action which breaks/violates the Laws of the Game''
