Question Number: 31889

Law 11 - Offside 10/10/2017

RE: Adult

Fred of phoenix, Arizona United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 31815

Based on the video that was sent in the follow up question, should he have been flagged for offsides?

video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBkFGhj7p2o&t=10m15s

He was near, but not involved in active play and the defender deliberately played the ball.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Fred
I believe that on balance it was offside as the Red player did challenge an opponent for the ball in active play.
I also think that at this level it could have been a wait and see decision as Black had control of the ball. Black ended up playing it short anyway as originally planned so all the decision really did was stop the game. If there was a minor foul by Red the referee would have allowed play to continue.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

HI Fred,
it was marginal but apparently the AR did consider this as NEAR and OBVIOUSLY challenging as opposed to watching & waiting. He waited to see if the ball was safely played away and went with a late flag to which the CR agreed. . HIs match His decision His reputation
Cheers
