Question Number: 32050Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/24/2017RE: Adult Mike of Montreal, Qc Canada asks...Whistle is blown for half time. As team A is walking off the pitch, two teammates get into a heated debate. While still on the field of play, one of the teammates slaps the other one. Red card is issued to the slapper. No other sanctions are issued as cooler heads prevailed and team vacates the pitch for halftime. Once the game resumes, following halftime, should the offending team play with 10 players? Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove Hi Mike, The offending team should start the second half with 10 players. It is only when a player is sent off before play starts, that a team does not have to play a man down. The law states as follows: ''A player who is sent off: [...] before kick-off may be replaced by a named substitute'' but that ''A player who is sent off: [...] after the kick-off can not be replaced''
