Question Number: 32380Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/16/2018RE: Competitive Under 19 Salvador Flores of Indianapolis, IN United States asks...If the referee stops play and cautions a player for dissenting, the correct restart is an IDFK, but if the team of the player who got caution is in possession of the ball before play was stop, does the IDFK go to the opponent even if the other team had possession and their own player was caution? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Salvador Yes the restart goes to the opponents. As the player has offended the Laws of the Game the IDFK is against him and his team from the location of the offence. A team must never be rewarded for infringing the Laws with a restart.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Peter Grove Hi Salvador, Dissent is an offence. If the referee stops play to caution a player for this offence, the resulting indirect free kick goes to the opponents of the player that was cautioned. This is a basic principle, expressed in the law as follows: ''Direct and indirect free kicks are awarded to the opposing team of a player guilty of an offence.''
