Question Number: 32488

League Specific 6/2/2018

RE: Adult

Darren Tabbott of Nottingham, England asks...

If a player gets a red card in a international friendly is the player suspended for the first game of the world cup.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Darren
My understanding is that the player will certainly have to serve a sanction and that the suspension will be served in the next friendly game/s.
So a player will not miss any game at the WC for a red card in a friendly.
The only exception might be where the player has done someting untoward that merits a serious sanction from all soccer activity.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

If it was an international sanction of substance like a Sanchez biting incident then quite possibly. It could depend I think on the severity of the incident? A double yellow would not carry the weight of a VC. Only the ruling body can determine the sanction for us to speculate is redundant!
Cheers
